The Healers Café

Hi, it's Manon Bolliger (facilitator and retired naturopath with 30+ years of practice) and I want to welcome you to the Healers Cafe. I am so excited to be doing this series of interviews and what I'll be doing is, is asking all kinds of healthcare practitioners, doctors, healers of all types, to really share with all of you their experience, why they became healers, what called them what they think about this being a healer thing. Is it, a thing? Who's really healing in this, what they've experienced from their their interaction with clients and patients and what the takeaways and understanding of what the process of healing is all about and the process of life. So that's the essence of what I'm doing. I'm hoping that this will serve also for patients that have issues and are looking for different ways of approaching it. * De-Registered, revoked & retired after 30+ years of practice. Now resourceful & resolved to share with you all the tools to take care of your health & vitality!

John C. Coleman (28:30):

So what we did was with all my patients over a two year period, the diet, the food, the meditation, the dancing, singing, laughing, etc etc they are the aquas and then they chose a bodywork and some did massage, reflexology, Feldenkrais, acupuncture, etc some did Bowen And because at the time I was seeing all my patients pretty regularly rather than having them spread around the world I was able to keep notes of their progress and I found that the end of two years the people using Bowen were making better progress. So that, that was number one

John C. Coleman (34:55):

It just healed it !fixed the physical distortion, whatever it was. And yeah, look, nothing better than being out in the garden doing paving or whatever. See your Bowen therapist, have a treatment, all the body celebrates.

John C. Coleman (35:15):

It's a journey. They're chronic for a reason. Nothing's going to be fast. We need to learn. There's a fusion. I was given many, many years ago. I was in a meditation, social, spiritual development circle. I had a lot of messages come to me and I was shown a vision of a very narrow footbridge across a Canyon, something like the grand Canyon. Huge. And I was told I had to go from this side to that side. You know, it's a long way and I'm unwell. I'm on a ride, a bike or drive a car or flying and said, no, you walk. Because every point on that bridge shows you America, the view is fantastic. And every stepping shoe in your view and your vision, you need to walk that bridge. And that, that's a journey with, with illness, whatever it is, you know, we need to walk.

Highlights from today's episode include:

At 7:35 And even more interesting if we count the bacterial cells versus human cells that the research studies are showing is that we are only 43% human. We have human cells and everything else, our bacterial cells.

At 19:05 I had such a big surprise when I went to medical school, I learned that body and mind , you know are very separate. You have a physical problem, go see a doctor, you have a mental emotional problem, go see a psychologist, or if it has to be a doctor, a psychiatrist. So this was my biggest surprise when I learned mind body medicine like homeopathy, that they are actually connected. That is why I encourage everyone if you want to choose the medical field choose a form of natural medicine, because its really holistic and goes with the body mind experience. And it is really works on a deeper level. It goes beyond just cutting down the inflammation or the pain in a joint. It can really transform your life and your health.

In this episode of The Healers Café, Dr. Manon chats with Dr Wayne Phimister

Dr Wayne Phimister (03:34):

And it's funny because when I think about medical school or becoming a doctor, that was never part of my mindset. It was always just to help people. I want to help people, but I want to deal with the challenge. So if we move forward over 30 years now, and that's exactly what I am, is I'm still wanting to help people.

Dr Wayne Phimister (03:57):

And it's a huge challenge. And what I've realized is there's a difference between medicine and healing, which is kind of strange because the origins of medicine was all about healing. Correct. But now we're finding, as you know, the dominant theme of medicine is assessment, symptoms, symptoms, signs, diagnoses, investigations and treatments. And you know, the majority is medications or surgeries. And that's what we're trained in.

Dr Wayne Phimister (12:51):

Well, it's, I think in all honesty functioning as a family doctor because of the time constraints and you're there to collect symptoms and you know, all the symptoms or as many symptoms as you can and our job is to go and find those symptoms. But I think in reality it's more what is the patient saying And then you get onto that mindset of reductionist model of, you know, trying to figure out what they're talking about or what the problem is and you confirm it with the diagnosis. So confirm it with the examination focal examination. Right. And then go down the path of investigations and diagnosis. But we're talking about medicine here. We're talking about traditional medicine where it's a symptom based world and well,

Dr Wayne Phimister (31:07):

We do MRI scans and there's one doctor says, look, you cannot get an MRI scan standing in Canada and we think about it when you stand you get your whole axial skeleton with gravity pulling and it's a very different thing to lying down in a bed with gravity spread out.

Dr Wayne Phimister (31:57):

So this dynamic body that we have that always moves and never stay still really, you know, it's a different picture that you're seeing on a different position. Now I had to, well there is one MRI scan in Kamloops, in BC here and up in Dr Brown's office who is a neurosurgeon and he does MRI scans sitting down.

About Dr Wayne Phimister:

Wayne Phimister is a family physician, clinical assistant professor at UBC, clinical instructor at Stanford University in the USA, author and speaker who is dedicated to finding solutions for people suffering in chronic pain. He trained as a MD and family physician in his native country of Scotland in 2000 and moved to BC in 2003 after work in New Zealand. He is also certified in medical acupuncture and intramuscular stimulation which started the journey into healing pain through natural methods and used these healing modalities alongside his regular family practice for many years. He now has an exclusive practice treating and managing pain in the Fraser Valley at 3 sites focusing on releasing tension in the body through trigger point injections and hydro-dissection, optimising the brains neuroplastic state for healing with cognitive behavioural therapy and anti-inflammatory nutrition advice. His new area of research is cold exposure with breathing meditation to further reduce inflammation in the body. He believes all people in pain deserve to know why they have pain, and how they can be empowered on the journey of healing by finding solutions for this crippling condition.

Wayne has run his podcast show called, “21st Century Pain Solutions” for over 2 years, does Live Streams on Thursday at 7pm and a TEDx speaker.

He is a single Dad to 3 children who inspire him to be the best person he can be in service to humanity.
