In this episode of The Healers Café, Dr. Manon chats with Dr. Romi Fung, ND. Highlights from this episode include:
Dr Romi Fung (08:53):
It's how we apply what naturopathic modalities and naturopathic principles there are but naturopathy is the use of, as it states natural or natural substances in supporting the body's own innate ability to heal. And under naturopathy or naturopathic medicine, there are principles that we abide by and that's what we call the naturopathic oath. So being first do no harm That whatever we provide, we assess for the risk of harm and making sure that whatever we suggest has the most minimal of harm possible. And then others involving, treating the root cause, doctor as teacher, which I'm very big on and so forth. And amongst naturopathic medicine, there are modalities that we utilize. So with physicians, conventional physicians and conventional medicine utilizing more so pharmaceuticals, even though naturopathic doctors are trained in the pharmaceuticals, we also utilize nutrition and physical medicine, counseling techniques, homeopathy. What else am I missing? Botanicals. Botanicals. Yeah. And so, and, and lifestyle because that's what we have to focus on in regards to focusing on the simplest, but also the foundations of our health. The pillars of our health.
Dr Romi Fung (21:12):
But this patient came in and literally within minutes of our consultation she bursted out in tears. She was going through a lot of stress, especially with family and she didn't know how to handle it. And she felt almost helpless. And for 30 minutes we talked about it. I thought it would give her the space for her to be heard. And for me to really understand like this is probably the important part, that I probably play a role more so than most other practitioners is allowing myself to be in the shoes of my patients.
Dr Romi Fung (21:58):
I'm trying to figure out what's really happening. And I thought to myself, you know, I had a bit of extra time. She's expressed a lot and she felt as though we can definitely do something, but I really felt like I couldn't leave her at that point. I was afraid or I was scared that she would potentially harm herself. And even though we have instances where we can contact professionals to make sure that they're properly addressed, I needed to do something that would get to her immediately. And that's when I said to her, let's get you on the table. I'm going to do a quick session on you. I'm going to do something called Bowen therapy. And we got to it. And I did the basic moves aims one, two, and three. And by the end of it, I looked at her and I looked at her face, she looked a lot more focused, and then she looked at me and she was like, I've never felt this clear before in like the past few months.
Dr Romi Fung (23:08):
And then she started tearing again. But then she told me that this is not because I'm sad, but these are tears of joy. And so it was from that moment then we decided, you know, let's get a plan going. And that's when I decided to add in the the naturopathic elements, making the nutritional work and lifestyle. But, and I mean I liked Bowen therapy as a standalone treatment as well as a combination because it's so complimentary. But by putting them together, you don't really know which one works and which one does it.

At 6:41….And what I noticed very quickly is that all the veterans I'd worked with had early childhood trauma. So what we were actually doing was working with the early childhood perception of belief that led them to have a predisposition to the raise cortisol and adrenaline. You know, and then looking at the science of that, and many times it was epigenetic.
At 7:41…But now I would say what I specialize in is people come to me that seem to be stuck and have tried everything and they're very, very aware that they need to step forward on their mission here. This time being a soul in a body, having a human experience. And so what I do with them as we work together to release the trauma and the perceptions of belief that stopped them from aligning to their mission. So I feel like my mission is to get people on their mission.
At 16:08…Sometimes it's in a child, sometimes it's akashic records. Sometimes it's, you know, really looking at past lives. Sometimes it's a rebirth thing, looking at the conception, pregnancy, birth process and healing, all of that coming into the world, you know. And yeah, sometimes it's healing relationships. That's a favorite one. Cutting the ties with forgiveness with relationships. So it's like, you know, a smorgasbord of ways that we can have fun and share these things without seeing trauma.

Dr Ivano Ongaro (06:41): ..... Like my father had only grade five education. My mother not at all, so they weren't able to help me. So I've always been interested and curious, curious in the sciences. I loved science. I think I had I mean since I was about 12 or 13 years old, I've always had a microscope, right. So I love looking at things under the microscope and I loved science, but it wasn't till grade eight where there was an academic shift and I think it was a probably confidence building. I know my handwriting was notorious and it was it was Mrs. Kennedy who, who insisted that I improve my handwriting. But I was originally left handed and I was forced to be right handed. So cursive writing never, worked for me. And so she had me go back to printing and that made a big difference because now I can actually read what I wrote.
Dr Ivano Ongaro (32:40): I know there were classmates of mine that would be out fishing every weekend while I was studying, but that's, you know, they were obviously brighter than I was cause I had to, I had to do the work to get through. And, art. I've always been, I've always had that little spark of passion for art and, and slow, keep chipping away at it, keep, keep at it. You know, and someday you'll be surprised. I was surprised with my first bust, how lifelike it was.
Dr Ivano Ongora (35:55): But you know, I've always believed that your award in life is proportional to the people you serve. ....... I've written a book that's entitled cavities no more. I think I mentioned it on the, on the cruise. And I want to set up a foundation, a nonprofit foundation to, to educate parents of children who are who are underprivileged and, and make this information available to them. So that's, that's sort of, my last sort of big goal.

My journey as a healer began in the fall of 1962. On my walk to school one fall morning, I had picked some ripe raspberries that were growing along the fence of one of several houses along the way. It happened that one of the larger seeds of one of the raspberries got stuck in the cavity that was developing in my upper left molar. I knew the hole was there because when I chewed gum I could get an imprint of the hole, and occasionally the tooth would ache if I ate candies and therefore avoided them. Although it was not painful the seed was very annoying and my tongue it played with it incessantly. I resolved to remove the stuck seed with a paperclip I found in my desk. I straightened one end of the paperclip and proceeded to pry out the offending seed. Things did not go as I planned. Instead the seed popping out I succeeded in driving it into the cavity with surprisingly unpleasant results. The pain was intense and throbbing, not as bad as when I’d been stung by a wasp under the fingernail, maybe it was the proximity to the brain made it more worrisome. It was my first serious tooth ache, and a sleepless night for me and my mother. Fortunately the next morning we got an appointment, my first, to see the dentist Dr. Wally Meyer. It was a magical experience. Within minutes of what ever it was he did in my mouth caused the pain to vanish. I remember every detail of that visit, smells, the weird machine with belts and pulleys, the grinding noises, the dust flying out of my mouth, the sensation of my face seeming to slide off my skull and the squeaking noises packing and carving of the filling. I remember thinking “I could do this.” Most of my academic life was struggling with learning challenges and did not believe I had the intellectual resources necessary to become a Dentist. It was not until my high school biology teacher, Mr. Risuto, convinced me that had the capacity to achieve if I continued to be disciplined in my studies. The rest was doing the work to the best of my abilities.

Hi, it's Dr Manon Bolliger, ND and I want to welcome you to the Healers Cafe.
I am so excited to be doing this series of interviews and what I'll be doing is, is asking all kinds of healthcare practitioners, doctors, healers of all types, to really share with all of you their experience, why they became healers, what called them what they think about this being a healer thing. Is it, a thing? Who's really healing in this, what they've experienced from their their interaction with clients and patients and what the takeaways and understanding of what the process of healing is all about and the process of life. So that's the essence of what I'm doing. I'm hoping that this will serve also for patients that have issues and are looking for different ways of approaching it.
So I've interviewed all kinds of complimentary health practitioners and then some that you may already know about, like chiropractors or physios surgeons, psychiatrists and also some that are less known, like some of the energy workers and things I don't know about yet.
And then I'm so excited to, to learn and also I'll be sharing stories from Bowen therapists that I have trained myself or that are practicing it now and have stories to tell. So it's really the, the goal here for the end user as in the person who needs help is to see who they relate with and what, you know, what the insights of the therapies might be, especially the, the less known ones. And so hopefully that will give you an insight there. And then for practitioners, it's really to, to have a, a place where we can meet and talk and have discussions on, on all aspects of healing. It's really conversations on health that I'm looking forward to, to having.
For those who don't know me, I'll tell you a little bit about myself. So I have been blessed and that's a retrospective view with having encountered several health conditions.
So I had turned-in feet when I was born. I also had scoliosis, I developed multiple sclerosis and I had stage four cancer. All of them, were treated naturally at least. Although the last three. And I became really interested in discovering what we can do to help ourselves and how amazing and powerful our own bodies actually are. So something called innate or intelligent healing that we all have. It's like, it's within us. But how do we trigger this? What excites that energy to, to manifest? And for those of you who, when I say the word energy are cringing I was the same. My background actually, I went into law. I have my LLB from Quebec. So my interest was really, I guess human rights is the, the, the baseline. But I really wanted to help empower people to make informed choices, to really understand what they're getting into, what they're signing and what they're signing up for.
And one of the areas that when I was doing my master's at McGill that got me super excited was alternative, so to speak, complimentary healthcare. So I was looking at it homeopathy and at the time chiropractor because at that time, which is quite a few years, and I don't want to date myself it was not that well known. Right. So I wanted to see how did they, how did they become accepted in our society or significantly more accepted? So I was looking at all that and I was looking at how is research done? How's the end user done? What are the, what are the aspects that take into what are taken into consideration to make decisions for what therapies get seen or not seen? And then as circumstance would have it. I I bumped into after I had done my naturopathic physician training, which, so basically after I finished law school, I I wasn't quite content.
I wanted to really be at the, at the level of where movements are made, when people care and when do people care? They care when it's their, their health, but especially when it's their health of somebody in their family. And that's when they really take charge and they want all these things informed consent. They really want to make the right decision. So that's what really got me going. It's like, okay, I need to actually be in the same position. Now I'm starting a family. I want to know all the right answers. I'm in. Who do I trust? How do I, you know, how do I understand research? So I started a whole path of really going down the, the way of like, how do I get to know what are the right things and how do I eventually learn to trust myself?
